Uterine fibroids are very common.
Uterine Fibroids are the most common benign tumor of women. According to the literature, the number of women who develop fibroids increases during a women's fertile years and decreases with menopause. In fact, approximately 20 percent of women in their 20's have fibroids, 30 percent in their 30s and 40 percent in their 40s. Only a small percentage of these fibroids become symptomatic. Approximately 20-40% of women above the age of 35 have uterine fibroids of significant size. Fibroid symptoms usually develop in a women's 30s and 40s.

There are many factors that initiate fibroid growth. Most are not well understood. African-American women develop fibroids two to three times more often than white women. This is thought to be secondary to genetic predisposition although this is not certain

Fibroids are very sensitive to the female hormone estrogen and grow when exposed to it. When estrogen levels fall with menopause the fibroids can shrink. This is the basis for the medical treatment of fibroids with GnRH analogs . These medications decrease the body's production of estrogen in women. Unfortunately, there are side effects and the fibroids grow back as soon as the medication is withdrawn. On the other hand, fibroids can grow quickly with pregnancy due to the increase in estrogen levels. They will usually go back to their original size after delivery or the termination of the pregnancy.
